Ingredients Notes

Here is more information on the ingredients you’ll need for this popular dip.

Bowls of Ingredients for Taco Dip on White Marble Surface
  • Bean dip – we prefer the Frito Lay bean dip; it comes in a 9-ounce container (so you’ll need two). Refried beans work well, too.
  • Guacamole – you can use creamy or chunky guacamole (as long as it’s spreadable); use your favorite guac or make your own.
  • Sour cream – any type of sour cream, like full-fat or light. You could also substitute it with plain Greek yogurt.
  • Taco seasoning – use your favorite type of taco seasoning mix. We like to use Old El Paso or a homemade blend.
  • Cheddar cheese – shredded cheddar cheese, like medium or sharp. A Mexican cheese blend is delicious, too.
  • Tomatoes – any tomatoes will work; we typically use hot-house or on-the-vine red tomatoes.
  • Olives – sliced black olives. Pre-sliced olives are convenient.
  • Green onions – chopped green onions. You can use both whites and greens.

More About This Recipe

We’ve made this dip for years. Growing up, our mom would make it for sleepovers and get-togethers at our house.

Our family has many people who don’t care for guacamole, so we often leave it out, and it’s still so delicious.

You can serve this dip in several ways: 1) in an 8×8 baking dish, as shown, 2) in a 9×13 pan so it’s thinner and more spread out, or 3) in plastic cups for individual servings, which is great for parties.

Variations

Here are a few ways to vary this dip recipe.

  • Add protein – add your favorite taco meat, like seasoned ground beef or diced chicken.
  • Make it spicy – swap regular bean dip for spicy bean dip, or top with jalapeno peppers.
  • Customize the toppings – customize the toppings with your favorite taco toppings like cilantro or fresh lime juice. Instead of only chopped tomatoes, add pico. (We have a delicious pico de gallo recipe here.)
