Variations

You will find many variations of this spice mix. Here are a few ways to vary this recipe.

  • Allspice: many recipes call for allspice. We prefer to leave this out. However, if you’d like to add allspice – just add half the amount you used for cloves, with other ratios remaining the same for the other spices.
  • Skip the nutmeg: our favorite pumpkin pie recipe uses only cinnamon, ginger, and cloves. You can easily skip the nutmeg if you don’t have it on hand.
  • Black pepper: weird, huh? Many recipes call this the ‘secret ingredient.’ We think the warm flavor of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and clove are delicious all on their own. But feel free to give this a try if you’d like.
